9/14/1921 - 3/26/2009 Gertrude "Trudy" Tkachyk 12/18/1928 - 5/29/2014 Together again.
Stefan was born in Stojaniv, Ukraine in 1921 and Trudy was born in Heilbronn, Germany in 1928. Stefan fought in the Ukrainian Army during WWII, was held prisoner in Italy and ultimately released to family in Canada. Due to the strife of the war in post war Germany, Trudy's family sent her to the US to join her Uncle in Chicago. The two met in Chicago in 1956. After love at first sight, they started their wonderful life together. Both became US citizens, were model patriots and faithful Catholics. Soon after they married, their only son, Steve was born. They lived in Chicago, Santa Clara, California and ultimately settled in Tucson due to Stefan's health. They both worked hard all their lives, Stefan at St Joseph's hospital and Trudy at Burr Brown until their retirement in 1985. The couple welcomed grandchildren, Kirsten (Matt), Nicholas and Andrew, who were the highlight of their retirement. Stefan was an amazing woodcarver and could be found annually at Tucson Meet Yourself with his fellow Ukrainians. Trudy happily cared for her grandchildren, her cat, her dog and enjoyed church work. The two spent many years with the parishioners of St Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church, ensuring the traditional Ukrainian Catholic worship was available to younger generations in Tucson. Friends from St. Michaels were an important part of their lives. They are survived by their son, Steve (Jean); their grandchildren, Trudy's sister, Ilse and her children and their families in Germany. Stefan's family includes cousins, Dachs, Kowalyks and Orenchucks all of California. Trudy leaves trusted caregivers, Dixie and Kelly who helped make her last years with Alzheimers happy ones. A traditional Ukrainian Prayer Service for Gertrude, with Viewing prior will be held Monday, June 9, 2014 beginning at 4:00 p.m. Funeral on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Both at St Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 715 W. Vanover Rd., Tucson, AZ 85705-4137. In Trudy's honor, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Research/Attn: Dr. Geoffrey Ahern, Department of Neurology, 7319 AHSC, 1501 N.
