William R. Sutherland
died peacefully at home on Thursday, February 6, 2014 surrounded by family members who adored him. His family was his life, his grandchildren and great- grandchildren his pride and joy, his friends his treasured fortune and his wife of 62 years his love. Bill had enjoyed an early 85th Birthday party on Sunday, February 2, 2014 with beloved wife, Alice and family. He leaves us with many happy memories and enduring images of his focused work ethic that enabled him to build the family's graceful home. Born February 4, 1929, Bill comes from a pioneering, ranching family who homesteaded along Sutherland Wash in Catalina State Park. After marrying Alice Sotomayor, he worked in the aircraft and construction industries. In retirement, he took up painting and drawing and built rocking horses and other projects for his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Debra (Bryan) Motzkin, Catherine (Michael) Hartline, Toni (Mike) Carroll; grandchildren, Jennifer and Joseph Motzkin, Eric (Amber) Hartline, Tim (Kristin) Hartline, Matt Hartline and eight great-grandchildren, Christopher, Evan, Elizabeth, Emma, Roman, Mackenzie, Khloe and Ava. He is predeceased by daughter, Elizabeth; an organ donor whose story of giving was honored in the 2012 Rose Parade. He is also predeceased by parents, William Ray and Esther Sutherland; sisters, Evelyn (Don) Duer, Irma (Tony) Hedgepath and brother, Ernest. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 12, 2014 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Rosary at 10:00 a.m., both at ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. St. Odilia Catholic Church, 7570 N. Paseo Del Norte. Interment will follow at Holy Hope Cemetery.
