The recipient of this week's Ben's Bell is Betty Vinall.

She was nominated by her friend, Dana Redavid, who said Vinall has helped her through challenging times.

Three years ago, when Redavid's husband died, Vinall "helped me get through the funeral, and has been by my side helping me get through the day to day of figuring out how to move forward," she wrote in her nomination.

Redavid was diagnosed with cancer and an associated disease last autumn and, again, Vinall stepped up.

"She has taken time off work to go to countless doctors appointments with me in Tucson and Phoenix, and organized friends to help me out with food, driving, and helping around the house," Redavid said.

After Redavid had a stem-cell transplant, "Betty put together a four-week schedule of friends to stay with me so I never had to be alone.

"She has never let me give up and has always kept things upbeat," Redavid said. "She is truly the most generous, selfless person I have ever met and is truly the definition of the word friend."

The project
