Shelby King, center with bell, brings teachers and low-income students together for a free summer program. She was nominated by Caroline McArthur, at right. McArthur's daughter, Maria, plays the violin. Also pictured are Mike King, Becky King and Kathy Koenig, in back.

The recipient of this week's Ben's Bell is music teacher Shelby King.

She was nominated by Caroline McArthur, the mother of one of King's students.

King organizes a program called Tucson Summer Music, "free summer music lessons to low-income children of Tucson," McArthur wrote in her nomination.

Children can receive lessons in piano, violin, guitar, flute, clarinet, saxophone, music theory, composition and singing. All lessons are taught by volunteers.

"My daughter, Maria, is a recipient of violin lessons," McArthur wrote. "We are truly grateful for this opportunity and for Shelby's organizational efforts and vision and the way she has been able to recruit teachers who are also willing to serve."
