The end of summer reminds me of hosting a party. It’s late at night but now it’s time for the guests to leave so that we can clean up and go to sleep – but then the last guests stick around and talk and talk and talk. Right about now it’s time for the hot air to take hint: go home and leave us alone.
As the summer wanes and the cooler air takes hold, Tucson is filled with running and walking events that take advantage of the early morning chill.
Let’s see what we have in store for the month.
Oct. 1: Jim Click’s Run n’ Roll 8K and 2-mile Fun Run. Staged at the University of Arizona and benefitting the UA Adaptive Athletic Facilities, this event is calendared on the Southern Arizona Roadrunners event as part of their Running Shop Grand Prix. See www.azroadrunners.org.
Oct. 15 Great Pumpkin 5K. A family treasure taking place on Buckelew Farms, about 10 miles west of Tucson, with 3.1 mile run/walk and 1-mile children’s run. Run or walk on dirt roads in a pumpkin patch and in a maze through the corn fields. See www.azroadrunners.org.
Oct. 21 Oracle Run 10K. Another neighborhood event, this long-standing run cruises the rolling hills in the town of Oracle, 20 miles north of Tucson. With a companion 2-mile walk and fun run, the Oracle Run benefits the Oracle Historical Society. See www.oraclehistoricalsociety.org.
Oct.28: Desert Boneyard 10K Run and 5K Run/Walk. A unique opportunity to visit the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, this 10k is held in the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group “boneyard” — a specialized airplane storage site that is popular on the Tucson tourist route. Registration information is not yet available.
Oct. 29: TMC Get Moving Tucson Half-Marathon Events, with the TMC A-Mountain Half-Marathon, the Tucson Lifestyle 5K Run/Walk, and the Cox Charities FitKidz Free One Mile Run/Walk. Staged in the heart of Downtown, this is Tucson’s biggest half-marathon event, with medals, T-shirts, children’s activities, and live music along the course. This event is calendared on the Southern Arizona Roadrunners event as part of their Running Shop Grand Prix. See www.azroadrunners.org.
