Tucsonans can thank the warm winter for the bounty of bougainvillea plants already in glorious full bloom.
“They never froze,” said Jon Childers, a sales advisor at Mesquite Valley Growers, 8005 E. Speedway.
“They’re built for the desert. The only thing that happens to them is they do freeze most years, but they do come back. The nice thing this year is they didn’t freeze.”
In addition to not having to prune the thorny, flowering plant, homeowners are being rewarded with a bounty of color.
For those without a bougainvillea, now’s the time to plant.
“Everybody is in full scale planting mode now. The next six to eight weeks is the time we plant for the summer.”
Mesquite Valley stocks bougainvillea plants in colors including white and gold to red, fuchsia and shades of purple.
