To celebrate Love of Literacy week, Daily Star cartoonist David Fitzsimmons asked local kids to send him their original cartoons about books and literacy.

Dozens of young artists responded with cartoons that were colorful or pencil-sketched, drawn in multiple panels or just one, with messages that were funny or inspirational, silly or serious. The response was more than we expected, and the judging was tougher than Fitz had anticipated.

After a tough judging session, Fitz and his helpers chose five winners, and Fitz offered to draw each of them at a cartooning clinic he conducted as part of Saturday’s Love of Literacy event at the Children’s Museum Tucson.

Today we’d like to share their drawings. They are all promising cartoonists in Fitz’s eyes, and we encourage them all to keep drawing.
