MIssion San Xavier del Bac

Danny Morales (cq middle-DANNY MORALES) gestures toward the East Tower at the Mission San Xavier del Bac (cq MISSION SAN XAVIER DEL BAC) outside Tucson, Ariz., as he discusses the work that is needed to restore the structure on Tuesday, January 6, 2009. After five years and $2.5 million the exterior restoration of the West Tower is complete, according to the nonprofit Patronato San Xavier (cq PATRONATO SAN XAVIER). Morales is the principal of Morales Restoration and Builders who used compatible materials and old, tried methods for the project. They stripped off the cement coating, repaired the low-fired adobe brick underneath and replaced the coating with a lime and sand plaster. Scaffolding of the East Tower for much-needed restoration work is in the works which is expected to take 3-4 years at a cost of $1.5 million.
