The case against a man accused in a nearly 40-year-old murder moved forward this week in Pima County Superior Court.

The Pima County Attorney’s Office has offered a plea deal to Bruce Alan McCullogh, who stands accused of stabbing and killing Donna Smith in 1976.

McCullogh, 66, fled Arizona after Smith’s death. The two were living together at a midtown house at the time.

Deputy Pima County Attorney Nicol Green said in a hearing last week that a plea deal remains on the table for McCullogh, who sat in a wheelchair during the hearing.

A pretrial conference was set for January 28. A trial date also will be scheduled at that hearing but could be vacated if McCullough accepts the deal the state offered.
