The U.S. Department of Justice has issued a report on the costs of indigent defense.

According to the report, the costs to defend indigent defendants has fallen in recent years about one percent.

States paid $2.2 billion for indigent defense.

In Arizona, the annual costs the state paid for indigent defense went from $2.7 million in 2008 to $1.3 million in 2012.

The report does note that not all states will cover the breadth of indigent defense costs. In some cases county governments handle most of the costs.
