Pima County Superior Court Judge Howard Hantman plans to retire at the conclusion of an ongoing criminal trial. His last day is scheduled for Friday.

Hantman has been on the bench since 1989, when he began as judge pro tempore. In 1994, then-Gov. Fife Symington appointed Hantman to replace recently deceased Judge G. Thomas Meehan.

Prior to his work as a judge, Hantman was a deputy Pima County Attorney and later an assistant public defender.

He went to University of Arizona Law School, graduating and being admitted to the State Bar in 1971.
