The trial of Kyle Alegria started today in Pima County Superior Court.

Alegria stands accused of sexually assaulting and killing a seven-year-old girl.

The girl, Rhia Almeida, was the friend of Alegria’s younger brother and lived in the same Ajo neighborhood.

The Pima County Attorney’s Office argued the girl rode her bike to Alegria’s house where he lived with his parents to visit the younger brother. The brother, however, wasn’t home.

The state contends that Alegria raped, beat and stabbed to death the girl, then disposed of her body in the wash yards away from his house.

Alegria’s defense team said he was insane at the time of the killing, and was in the midst of a psychotic episode when he brutally stabbed to death Almeida.

The trial is schedule to run for three weeks.
