A suspicious package found near Congress Street and Granada Avenue in downtown Tucson Wednesday morning has forced the closure of Evo A. DeConcini U.S. Courthouse at 405 W. Congress St.

Police also closed eastbound and westbound Congress for much of the morning, which caused traffic issues and some confusion for people attempting to reach downtown.

In at least one instance, the street closure and closure of federal court caused a defendant in Pima County Superior Court to miss a scheduled sentencing.

A defense attorney for the man informed a judge that police had told his client the courthouse was closed as he approached downtown from the westside.

The man was unaware that authorities had closed federal court while business continued as usual at superior court.
