The Altar Valley School District was honored earlier this month at the Arizona School Boards Association annual conference.

Altar Valley governing Board President Robert K. Ethridge was awarded the Arizona School Boards Association All-Arizona School Board Award for his dedicated efforts to improve the quality of education for Altar Valley students.

During his ten year tenure on the governing board, Ethridge has supported a more rigorous and relevant curriculum with a strong science, technology, engineering and math program. Ethridge has helped bring a free, full-day kindergarten and a pre-kindergarten program to fruition.

The leader of the Altar Valley School District, Nathan McCann, was also honored, being named All-Arizona Superintendent of the Year Award for small-size districts.

McCann, who is in the fourth year of his first superintendency, has pursued numerous grants to fund programs the financially strapped district could not otherwise afford. Under McCann’s leadership the district has increased its letter grade from the Arizona Department of Education to B, based in part on the increase in standardized test scores.

The Arizona School Boards Association is a private, non-profit, non-partisan organization that provides training, leadership and services to governing boards consisting of over 240 school district governing boards throughout the state.
