The Catalina Foothills School District is hosting a parent information session Wednesday on a Chinese immersion program for elementary school children.

The program offers English-proficient students an opportunity to acquire Chinese as a second language as well as gain an appreciation of the Chinese culture.

During the half-day kindergarten program, 100 percent of the core instruction — language arts/Chinese literacy skills, math, science and social studies — is taught in Chinese. In first grade, science, math and literacy skills are taught in Chinese, while language arts and social studies are taught in English.

In second grade through fifth grade, science, social studies and literacy skills will be taught in Chinese, while language arts and math will be taught in English.

The district started the immersion program this year with two kindergarten classes and two first grade classes. One additional grade level will be added each year.

The information session will be held at the Sunrise Drive Elementary School library, 5301 E. Sunrise Dr., from 6 to 7 p.m.
