A Doolen Middle School science teacher has been awarded a $5,000 grant to revamp his classroom and teaching tools.

Ivan Yocum was the recipient of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona's statewide giving campaign last month. The 12-month celebration will acknowledge those who are working to improve the lives of Arizonans.

Yokum and Doolen Middle School are being recognized for their ability to inspire students in science, technology, engineering and math. He was also named the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Top Science Teacher at this year's Southern Arizona Research Science and Engineering Fair.

The money will be used to buy updated books with integrated software support, modern microscopes and slides, chemistry lab tools, and science magazine subscriptions. Yocum and his students will also receive a field trip to the Arizona Science Center in Phoenix.
