Joel Leyva, a Rio Rico High School senior, has been named a 2013-2014 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar.

The College Board honor recognizes academically exceptional Hispanic students. This year the NHRP selected 5,300 Hispanic students from a pool of over 259,000 candidates for this distinction.

Candidates for scholar must be at least one-quarter Hispanic, have achieved a minimum PSAT/NMSQT score for their region, and have a junior year grade-point-average of 3.5 or higher.

Leyva, who has been offered and accepted a $15,000 annual scholarship for four years to the University of Arizona, plans to study medicine.
