A Salpointe Catholic High School senior was surprised in class this afternoon with news that she is the winner of a $10,000 college scholarship.

Alexa Christensen is one of 80 recipients across the country to receive $10,000 from Nordstrom’s TEN4U scholarship program.

Anne Baffert, Christensen's chemistry teacher, nominated her for the honor.

“Alexa was one of the top students in my rigorous honors chemistry class," Baffert said. "She is bright, well organized and highly motivated. She grasps difficult concepts readily and I could always count on her to help her peers who were struggling.”

Christensen is a merit scholar and a member of student council. This summer she pursued her passion in science interning at a pharmacology/toxicology lab through the University of Arizona’s KEYS Research Internship.

She participates in the Governor’s Youth Commission and the National Charity League and volunteers at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Therapeutic Riding of Tucson.

Christensen hopes to major in a science and technical related field.
