A Buena High School junior took first place in the 29th annual High School Shakespeare Competition earlier this month.

Rachel Ruby Squires of Sierra Vista, triumphed over 37 other performers in the contest, which was held at the Tornabene theatre at the University of Arizona.

Squires, 16, delivered a monologue as the character Emilia, from Two Noble Kinsmen. She will now travel to New York City in May for the national competition where a four-week study tour in Great Britain will be up for grabs.

The competition was sponsored by the Tucson Branch of the English-Speaking Union, a non-political organization dedicated to clear English expression in hopes that such expression will lead to improved international understanding and cooperation.
