Sunnyside alumni give $51,500 in scholarships

The Sunnyside District Alumni Association awarded $51,500 in scholarships to 43 graduating seniors earlier this week at an annual scholarship reception earlier this week.

The alumni association is a Dollars for Scholars affiliate.

Contributions for the awards were made by businesses, individuals and Sunnyside Unfied School District employees who gave more than $15,000 through payroll deductions.

Paula Garcia, a graduating senior from Sunnyside High School, is one of the 43 recipients and is also one of 20 students selected nationwide to receive the Dollars for Scholars Student Volunteer Award from Scholarship America.

The alumni association has awarded $515,000 in scholarships to 435 graduates since 2004.
