While most children are still enjoying family vacations, camps and other summer activities, students in Vail are preparing to head back to the classroom.

Monday will be the first day of school for kindergarten through eighth-grade students in the Vail School District.

High School students will start filing into classrooms on July 19.

The district operates on a modified schedule that includes shorter summer breaks but more time off in the fall and spring.

Vail students receive two weeks off in October and March, in exchange for the shorter summer vacations.

They also receive two weeks off during the Christmas holiday.

The district's school year ends in late May, similar to other area districts.
