Memorial day was not about mattress sales and barbecues, or picnics in the pines. It was about ghosts and heartache, pride and duty. It's about politics, maps and old men. It's about uniforms and random cruelty, missions and chance. It's about the ordinary few we never consider until we happen upon an extraordinary cemetery with small flags. It's about the forgotten names condemned by history's hand to be etched on a wall very few of us ever made the time to read. It's about the wars we can't place, name or list. It's about the battles unknown and unheralded. It's about the survivors, orphans, and widows we embrace in our hearts as we rush past the extraordinary cemeteries with small flags.
