County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry issued a memo this week to stress the county doesn’t allow its law enforcement officers to sellback unused sick days.

Unlike the city, which lets police and fire personnel sell up to 208 hours of sick leave a year, the county only pays out a portion of unused sick and vacation time when an employee retires.

The city’s sell back program costs about $2.5 million annually.

Huckelberry said since the lump sum payments don’t qualify as earned income, they don’t count towards an employees pension.
