The Sierra Vista Regional Health Center laid off 59 employees on Friday, the Sierra Vista Herald reported on the weekend.

The layoffs came the same week that the Carondelet Health Network laid off 40 people at its corporate office in Tucson. Carondelet operates three local hospitals, two of them in Tucson.

Bill Hess of the Sierra Vista Herald reported that a total of 94 positions were eliminated at the Sierra Vista hospital, but that 35 of those positions were unfilled.

Officials told Hess that the economy, and especially the turmoil in Medicare and state-operated Medicaid programs,as well a federal sequestration, were the major factors in the decision-making process to reduce the current workforce.

Three of the 59 laid off employees were registered nurses — two involved in direct patient care, Hess reported.
