A new studio that combines ballet barre work, Pilates and yoga is opening at La Encantada shopping center in Tucson and will be offering free classes during the week of May 19 - 25.

Barre3 is part of a chain of studios founded by fitness and wellness expert Sadie Lincoln in 2008. It has 70 studios worldwide, streaming online workouts and a new book/DVD series from Rodale Publishing called “Love your Lower Body.”

The local studio is owned by Kate Pedersen, who started doing the online barre3 workouts at home in Tucson and attended classes whenever she visited her family in Portland. At the time she was working as a nurse and experiencing a lot of back pain. The classes strengthened her back and she decided to bring the workouts to Tucson.

The workouts balance strength training through isometric holds and small, one-inch movements with seamless recovery stretches. Unlike other barre-inspired workouts, barre3 incorporates larger, functional movements with low-impact cardio to jumpstart the metabolism and re-oxygenate the body, company officials say.

No experience is required to take the classes. Participants are advised to arrive 15 minutes early to class, wear yoga-like attire and bring a water bottle. The studio has filtered water and supplies all props including a barre3 core ball, light weights, yoga strap, Pilates mat, and a ballet barre.

Socks are optional. The studio sells foot attire called ToeSox because they have sticky soles and allow feet to move freely.
