Amphitheater High School students shot their way to success at a pair of photo competitions earlier this month.

On Feb. 1, Amphi students won several top awards at a regional Skills USA competition with seven other high schools at Pima Community College.

Students were told to photograph the themes of joy and fear, as well as compete tests on photography knowledge.

Amphi senior Gabriel Farmer won first place overall, while senior Devin Lyons won second place in the peer-voted people's choice category. Junior Vanessa Ramirez followed, placing third in people's choice.

In another competition, Amphi junior Julio Morales placed first in a statewide Arizona School Boards Association Jack Peterson photography contest based on outdoor shots. His work was chosen out of that of more than 180 other students. The Amphi governing board recognized Morales during its Feb. 5 meeting.
