With telescope donations, the Sun City Oro Valley Astronomy Club is helping schoolchildren learn about the stars.

On Oct. 2, the Sun City Oro Valley Astronomy Club donated telescopes to every fifth grader at Coronado K-8, 3401 E. Wilds Road. It's the fifth consecutive year the club has made the donation.

“The idea behind it is to get them interested in science and math, using astronomy as a hook,” the club's Bob Cratty said in a news release.

Representatives from the club visited the school to show students how to use the equipment and joined them for a nighttime viewing. In addition to the telescopes for the students, the club donated eight telescopes that, thanks to specialized mounts and softeware, automaticlaly point to astronomical objects users choose.
