Gloria Martinez, an 8th grader at Basis Oro Valley, won a national gold medal in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for her sci-fi short story "Don't be Afraid of the Dark."

The only student in Arizona to win a gold medal for writing, she visited Carnegie Hall May 31 to receive her award in a ceremony.
