The Canyon del Oro High School pom team won its first state championship.

The 11-member squad competed against dozens of teams at the Arizona State Cheerleading/Pom Tournament March 1 and 2, winning the Division I Varsity Hip-Hop title in the small team category. The team also placed third in the Division II Varsity Pom category.

“I try to prepare them for real life,” coach Breland Atkinson said in a news release, adding that she teaches the students about accountability and time management, as well as dance.
