Cross Middle School seventh-grader Alexis Gomez won a local poster competition sponsored by the Catalina/Oro Valley Lions Club.

Her work features two clasped hands that represent the peace agreement that ended Civil War. Her effort was the winner among 57 combined entries from her school and Coronado Middle School. Entries followed the contest's theme of "Our World, Our Future."

Gomez's entry will move on to another round. Should her entry continue to advance through the next several rounds, she will be in the running for a $5,000 grand prize and a trip to an awards ceremony in New York City.
