Rattlesnake Ridge Elementary School sixth-grader Matthew Glasshoff won the Marana Unified School District spelling bee Jan. 22 by spelling the words "stipple" and "diagnosis" correctly.

The competition was at Mountain View High School, 3901 W. Linda Vista Blvd

Glasshoff, as well as the three students who placed behind him and an alternate, will move on to the Pima County Spelling Bee at 10 a.m. Feb. 22 at the Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and Blind, 1200 W. Speedway.

Glasshoff was followed by Tressah Moon, a fourth grader at Picture Rocks Intermediate School, Tortolita Middle School seventh-graders Thomas Rood and Sam Herschler, and Marana Middle School seventh-grader Grace Effis.

More than 5,500 students in the district competed in various spelling bees leading up to the district competition.
