Marana Middle School 8th grader wins district spelling bee

Jeremy Parry, an eighth-grader at Marana Middle School, won the Marana Unified School District Spelling Bee Wednesday with the word "gruesome."

Parry was one of 28 competitors in the contest, which was held at Mountain View High School and included spellers in fourth through eighth grades.

Parry was followed by Ironwood Elementary School sixth-grader Thomas Rood, Tortolita Middle School eighth-grader Elizabeth McGee, Marana Middle School eighth-grader IsaMaria Baker and DeGrazia Elementary School fifth-grader Samuel Rogers.

The top four spellers will compete at the Pima County Spelling Bee at 10 a.m. Feb. 16 at the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind, Berger Center for the Performing Arts, 1200 W. Speedway Blvd.
