At a special Oct. 16 meeting, the Mountain Vista Fire District Board of Directors voted unanimously to hire the district's own emergency services personnel.

Currently, the district uses Rural/Metro Fire Department to contract firefighters and emergency services personnel.

Chief Wilkerson states that “After lengthy discussions and community input, the board and I are confident that we can continue to improve emergency service operations in our community while maintaining a cost-efficient organization,” Mountain Vista Fire Chief Ed Wilkerson said in a news release.

Wilkerson will remain in his position, and the distrit will keep administrative staffers. The board voted Aug. 19 to notify Rural/Metro that it would not extend the contract past its termination date of June 30.

Mountain Vista has used contract workers since starting in 2008.
