Twin Peaks Elementary School kindergarten student Tyler Skorupa placed second in his grade level at the 2014 Arizona State Grade Chess Championships.

He was recognized at a March Marana Unified School District Governing Board meeting.

Skorupa won four out of five games in the Jan. 11 tournament at Sonoran Science Academy, 2325 W. Sunset Road.

More than 350 students took part in the competition, which was sanctioned by the Arizona Chess Federation.
