Two police officers shot and killed a man at a central apartment complex Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting happened in the 5300 block of East Ferry Drive near Freedom Park between South Swan and Craycroft roads.

A police spokesman said a woman called 911 just before 1:30 p.m. to report a suspicious man hiding in a makeshift doghouse in her back yard. When officers arrived, they saw the man crouched inside the doghouse, and he had a gun.

They ordered the man to drop the gun, but the man did not. At one point, the man raised the gun toward officers who fired, striking and killing the man.

The officers were not injured.
