A 3-year-old Amado boy remains in stable condition after surgery Monday for a gunshot wound to his lower torso, authorities said.

The child got a hold of an unsecured gun in his house and shot himself, said Deputy Tracy Suitt, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman.

The boy was flown by helicopter to University of Arizona Medical Center. After surgery, he slept through the night and is doing well, said Suitt Tuesday.

On Monday, deputies responded to the 26900 block of South Monarch Way in Amado at 12:40 p.m. to a report of a shooting involving the boy, said Suitt.

The boy's mother and older siblings were at the house at the time of the shooting, said Suitt.

He said detectives were continuing their investigation.

No further information was released.
