A Tucson man suspected of starting a fire in his apartment Saturday was captured after breaking into another unit and jumping out of a second-story window, police said.

Israel Salazar, 36, was booked into the Pima County jail and faces a charge of arson of an occupied structure and felony criminal damage over $10,000.

Damage to all 18 units of the three-story complex in the 8600 block of East Speedway at North Camino Seco well exceeds $10,000, a police spokesman said.

The flames, reported about 9:45 a.m., heavily damaged Salazar’s bottom-floor apartment and one next to it. The other apartments sustained smoke damage. Several people were checked out on scene by paramedics for minor smoke inhalation. The Red Cross helped 12 people displaced by the fire.
