The bicyclist struck and killed early this morning in a south side hit and run was a longtime bus driver at Sun Tran.

John Akers, 64, had worked for Sun Tran since May 1974, Michele Joseph, a spokeswoman for the bus service, said.

Akers was riding his bicycle to work at about 3:30 a.m. when he was struck and killed at the intersection of West Irvington and South Mission roads, law enforcement officials said.

Akers was riding his bicycle north on Mission Road and was in the middle of the intersection when a car traveling east on Irvington Road hit him and fled the scene, Deputy Jesus Bañuelos, spokesman for the PCSD, said.

Witnesses provided a description of the suspect’s vehicle and deputies found it hours later on the northwest side. A suspect has been arrested and is facing charges of second degree murder and leaving the scene of a fatal collision, Bañuelos said. The name of the suspect has not yet been released.
