One border patrol agent was killed and a second injured in a single-vehicle rollover near Benson Wednesday morning.

The crash occurred at about 7:40 a.m. and tire tread separation was a contributing factor, said Raul Garcia, spokesman for the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The vehicle was eastbound on Interstate 10 about eight miles east of Benson when the agents crashed, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The agents were on duty at the time of the rollover, Commissioner R. Gil Kerlikowske, of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said in a news release.

Both agents were transported to the University of Arizona Medical Center; one via air ambulance, the other by ground ambulance.

The more seriously injured agent, a five-year veteran of the border patrol, died during the flight to the hospital, Kerlikowske said.

The condition of the other agent was not released.
