A 4-year-old boy nearly drowned Saturday in a pool at an apartment complex, even though adults were nearby.
Tucson firefighters arrived just before 4:30 p.m. at the complex in the 8000 block of East Lakeside Parkway, near the intersection of South Pantano and East Golf Links roads on the east side.
The boy was one of about 10 children playing in the pool while five adults, including his parents, were nearby, Capt. Barrett Baker, spokesman for the Tucson Fire Department, said.
The child was lethargic after the adults pulled him from the pool, and “he was awake but very unresponsive” when firefighters and paramedics arrived, Baker said. He was taken to a hospital.
“This is an unfortunate reminder that a near drowning can occur even with adults just feet away,” Baker said. “We must have a designated child watcher with eyes on the pool and nothing else.”
