Two brothers have been arrested in connection with a road rage shooting that injured a 9-year-old girl Thursday evening.

Oscar Santa Maria, 19, and Carlos Santa Maria, 20, fled the scene of the shooting, but were arrested later that night, said Sgt. Pete Dugan, spokesman for the Tucson Police Department.

The shooting occurred at about 6 p.m. in the area of East Irvington Road and South Campbell Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a 9-year-old girl had been shot in the leg. She was taken to a local hospital and released late Thursday night, Dugan said.

Detectives investigating the incident learned that the shooting was the result of a rolling argument between occupants of two vehicles.

“At one point during the argument, guns were displayed and gunfire was exchanged from both vehicles,” Dugan said.

The girl who was shot was riding in a vehicle driven by her father. Also in the vehicle were a woman and an 11-year-old boy, Dugan said. No one else was injured.

The Arizona Department of Child Safety (formerly Child Protective Services) was called and the children were temporarily placed with family members.

The second car, a white Dodge Neon, fled the scene before police arrived. Detectives tracked down the car and arrested the brothers.

They face one count each of drive-by shooting. Additionally, Carlos Santa Maria, who was the passenger, faces four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Charges are pending against the driver of the other, Dugan said.
