Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area of East Speedway and Freeman Road tonight, on Tucson's east side, due to a serious three-vehicle accident there.

One person was extricated from a small SUV which sustained heavy damage. That person is being treated for life-threatening injuries and was taken to the University of Arizona Medical Center, Rural/Metro officials said in a news release.

Two other people, who were in the other two vehicles involved in the crash, are being treated for minor injuries, the officials said.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department will investigate the cause of the crash.
