An undocumented immigrant with multiple injuries was rescued Monday night after falling about 150 feet from a mountain near Nogales, officials said.

At about 9 p.m. during a routine patrol, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection helicopter crew spotted what appeared to be a flicker of light on the west side of Mule Ridge.

A man who had fallen from a mountain was signaling for help, said officials in a news release. A Blackhawk helicopter crew was called in to assist with the rescue because of the rugged terrain.

The man was coughing up blood and had a difficult time breathing. He suffered a severely fractured ankle and cuts to his face and back, according to the release.

He was hoisted out and taken by ambulance to a medical helicopter, which flew the man to a Tucson hospital.

The man's condition was unknown.
