Traffic is being detoured in a midtown neighborhood Tuesday afternoon while police try to get a suicidal man to come out of his home, a police official said.

Earlier this morning an elderly man called police “and advised that he wants to take his own life,” Sgt. Maria Hawke, spokeswoman for the Tucson Police Department, said in an email.

“He indicated that he might be armed. For that reason, we are taking every precaution for his safety, the safety of other citizens in the area and our safety as we work on efforts to get him to come out of his house unarmed so that we can get him the mental health or other assistance that he might need,” Hawke said.

Traffic restrictions are in place along North Columbus Boulevard from East Speedway to East Fifth Street. Traffic may be delayed for several hours.
