A single-vehicle rollover has sent two people to the hospital and closed part of a south-side street.

Rescue crews are on the scene of the crash near the intersection of South Alvernon Way and East Irvington Road, said Capt. Grant Cesarek, spokesman for Rural/Metro Fire Department.

Southbound Alvernon is closed south of Irvington and northbound Alvernon is down to one lane, Cesarek said.

The crash occurred about 8:15 a.m. The man driving the car was ejected. He suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to the University of Arizona Medical Center. Cesarek did know whether the driver was wearing a seatbelt.

Rescuers had to use the jaws of life to cut doors off the vehicle before extricating the passenger. She was wearing a seatbelt and was taken to another local hospital with minor injuries, Cesarek said.
