A 44-year-old Mexican man was arrested Friday for attempting to smuggle nearly 221 pounds of marijuana through the Port of Douglas.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers referred Julian Obeso-Acosta of Agua Prieta, Sonora, for a more thorough search of his van, according to a news release from the Department of Homeland Security.
During the search officers found 157 packages of marijuana concealed within the headliner and several other locations within the vehicle. The marijuana had a street value of more than $110,000.
Friday’s seizure followed three other marijuana seizures earlier last week totaling 680 pounds and valued at an estimated $339,700.
Obeso was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations. The drugs and vehicle were seized.
