GV couple in possible murder-suicide ID’d

A couple found dead from gunshot wounds inside a Green Valley home in a possible murder-suicide Saturday have been identified.

George Phillips, 77, and his wife, Alice Phillips, 76, were found by deputies who responded to an unknown problem in the 300 block of North Cape Royal Drive, Chief Deputy Chris Nanos of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said Monday.

The residence is west of Interstate 19, and deputies responded shortly before 6 p.m. to investigate, Nanos said in a news release.

Investigators believe George Phillips shot his wife, and then shot himself, said Nanos. George Phillips may have had a terminal illness, he said.

2 hurt in off-road vehicle crash

Two people were injured in an off-road vehicle crash Sunday southwest of the city.

Pima County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a desert area on South Camino Verde, south of West Ajo Way, about 7:30 p.m. after a report of an all-terrain vehicle crashing with a Polaris off-road vehicle, said Chief Deputy Chris Nanos.

Deputies say the driver of the ATV, Joshua Gradillas, 27, crashed head-on with the Polaris, which had four occupants, Nanos said.

Gradillas, who was thrown from the ATV, was taken to University of Arizona Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet, Nanos said.

An occupant of the Polaris was taken to UAMC with nonlife-threatening injuries.

The three remaining occupants in the Polaris left the scene, said Nanos.

Traffic unit detectives took over the investigation. Alcohol was a factor in the crash, said Nanos, but no further information was released.
