Lukeville agents seize AK-47s at border

Customs agents at the Lukeville border crossing arrested a 45-year-old Mexican national on Saturday after finding two AK-47 rifles and ammunition clips hidden in the car he was driving, officials said.

Customs and Border Protection officers checking travelers leaving Arizona sent Mario Munoz of Ajo for an additional inspection of the Chrysler sedan he was driving, according to a news release from the agency.

During the inspection, officers located two AK-47 rifles and a pair of empty ammunition magazines in the vehicle’s dashboard.

The guns, magazines and vehicle were seized. Munoz was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.

2 teens injured as car hits tree, parked truck

Two teenagers were injured when the car they were in left the road and hit a mesquite tree and a parked truck.

The crash happened about 1 p.m. Monday in the 2400 block of West Wetmore Road, where it curves into North Highway Drive, said Capt. Adam Goldberg, a Northwest Fire/Rescue District spokesman.

The 18-year-old driver of a Honda sedan lost control of the car for an unknown reason, Goldberg said.

The driver’s 18-year-old girlfriend had to be extricated by firefighters from the car and was taken to the trauma center at University of Arizona Medical Center in serious but stable condition.

The driver had minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Neither teen was wearing a seat belt, Goldberg said. Their names were not released.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is handling the crash investigation.
