Two groups of men engaged in a running gun battle Tuesday morning in midtown that left one person dead.

At about 9 a.m., two groups of men — three or four in each group — had a confrontation in the parking lot of a motel in the 1500 block of South Craycroft Road between East 22nd and 29th streets, said Sgt. Pete Dugan, spokesman for the Tucson Police Department.

“Guns are displayed, shots are fired from both groups,” Dugan said. “It started in the parking lot of a motel, goes across 26th Street and into the parking lot of a Circle K, so it’s a running situation.”

When officers arrived, they found one man with gunshot wounds. He was taken to a local hospital where he died, Dugan said. The name of the man was not released.

No arrests have been made, but Dugan said, “We have some people detained. We’re trying to find out who’s involved and who isn’t.”
