A man on the northwest side has life-threatening injuries after crashing a motorcycle into a sheriff’s department SUV as it was parked on the side of the road this afternoon.

The deputy had responded to a call at about 2:30 p.m. of a man running in and out of traffic near Thornydale and Cortaro Farms roads. By the time the deputy arrived, the man had fled the scene on a motorcycle, said Deputy Jesus Bañuelos, a Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokesman.

As the deputy was sitting in his SUV along the southbound lane of Thornydale, he saw a motorcyclist coming up behind him at a high rate of speed. As the cyclist got within a couple of hundred feet of the SUV, the rider lost control and the motorcycle slammed into the deputy’s vehicle, Bañuelos said.

The man was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Bañuelos did not provide the name or age of the man.

The investigation is ongoing.
